Artworks by Yasmeen Abdallah and Triada Samaras Summer/Fall 2024

James Howe Gallery is proud to present an exhibition titled, “Transcending Bodies”:

Installations by Yasmeen Abdallah and paintings by Triada Samaras.

The exhibition is on display from Sunday, July 28 through Friday, September 6, 2024. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 3-6 pm at the gallery.  All are welcome to attend.

“Transcending Bodies” features recent works by Yasmeen Abdallah and Triada Samaras, who are both Adjunct Faculty in the Fine Arts Department at Kean University.

Triada Samaras is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions and venues. Samaras is a New England born, Greek-American who has family members living on both sides of the Atlantic. She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York for many years. For over 15 years, Samaras has been exploring the themes of identity, body, house/home, voice, and geography in her work, often in art activist contexts. The exhibition “Transcending Bodies” also features her paintings on the theme of Long Covid.

Yasmeen Abdallah is an interdisciplinary artist, working across intersections of sculpture, textiles, painting, and social engagement. Drawing from the personal and the political through elements of memory, empowerment, trauma, resilience, and persistence, her work takes shape in various capacities from minimal gestures to maximal installations. This work is inspired by contemporary culture, history, space, place and personhood. She is interested in the stories told, and secrets kept by imprints and objects that speak to our contemporary culture.

Triada Samaras Paintings Exhibition James Howe Gallery Kean University

Even as the old work gets hung on the wall in my Kean University Fine Arts exhibition my new work is already lying around in small piles around the studio.

It helps so much to see the progression from old to new.
Unfortunately the cell phone photo I took of this watercolor is not doing it any justice however its the only photo I have for now...
In reality it is MUCH bluer!

Triada Samaras Paintings Exhibition Kean University

Having my exhibition at Kean University has given me a perspective on my work over time that is really valuable to me as an artist.

I had forgotten how I love to use words especially poetry in some of my larger works. Some smaller one as well. And I forgot how freeing it is to work larger! Damn! So I am experimenting with this canvas which is my largest to date (since I became ill). It is 3 feet by 4 feet and acrylic...it balances on my easel but precariously I must say. And Eureka! to using my whole arm to paint! once in a while!

Triada Samaras New Work

Even as the old work gets hung on the wall in an exhibition the new work is already lying around in small piles around the studio.

It helps so much to see the progression from old to new.

Where am I going now?  I never know but when the work is all together it looks like I made it cohesive on purpose.

Really any cohesion is a total accident as I never quite know what I am doing with paint.  It rules me not the other way around.

Triada Samaras Exhibiting Painting at James Howe Gallery at Kean University

I am almost done installing my artwork at Kean at Howe Gallery in Kean University. I want to thank my art installer and fellow artist Avery S. (BAS Art) who did a spectacular job. And Tino F. Cook, fellow artist, for all his help. With Long Covid I am unable to hang large artworks like this in a gallery. The largest paintings were completed before the onset of my illness. I have changed/grown so much as a person and as an artist due to Long Covid. I also now have a yen to do another larger painting (!) and will have to figure out how to pull this off. Even with vastly different and lower energy, where there is a will there is a way.....

New Watercolor

This watercolor keeps morphing! It is a 22” x 30” sheet of very durable watercolor paper: (New York Central Watercolor Paper Sheets, 22x30 Inch, 140lb Cold Press, Pack of 10 - Professional Grade, Acid-Free, Archival - for Wet and Dry Media) , and there are some pastels now buried under the water color. The title is “Project 2025” and the painting changes as my hopes for America rise and fall daily.

Q&A About the Fine Art Printing Process

What is a Fine Art Print?

A fine art print is a reproduction or a copy of an artist’s original painting using a digital printing process with archival inks on fine art paper. Fine art printing is the term often used to refer to professional photographs being printed on very high quality paper. This designation, which is by no means a label, meets certain quality criteria, with regard to the paper and inks, which are sought after by many photographers and printers.

What is a Limited Edition?

Limited edition prints have been specifically created by the artist, and there are only a certain number available. The print often comes with a certificate, a number designating which exact pint it is within the total number of reproductions, and the artist's signature to show their authenticity. Read more about this

What is the difference between fine art paper and photo paper?

The difference between fine art paper and commercial photo paper lies in the composition of the paper itself. Natural fibers (usually cotton or alpha cellulose) must be included within the composition of fine art paper. The paper is not artificially bleached with chlorine or other chemicals that would break down the paper and the inks over time. Commercial photo paper is better for photos viewed on an occasional basis, whereas fine art paper will ensure that images are shown off in their best light and provides good performance in exhibitions. Because fine art paper is intended for the printing of high quality photographs, its quality must be ideally suited to receiving inks and pigments. The composition of the surface layer must allow the ink to adhere well over time, while offering a neutral pH to ensure that the paper also stands the test of time. Fine art paper will also allow you to emphasize the composition of the image by providing the ideal support for intense colours and marked contrasts, while also enabling a wide range of grey tones.  Read more about this

What is archival ink?

Archival ink is specifically designed to be resistant to weathering and fading so that it will last for a long time. It is often used for scrap-booking and other activities where the written or drawn images need to be preserved indefinitely. To make the most of archival ink, it is best to use it in conjunction with archival paper, which is also made to resist weathering and fading. Read more about this

What is Hahnemühle Paper?

Hahnemühle paper is a fine art quality paper manufactured by Hahnemühle FineArt, Inc., a paper manufacturing company in the Relliehausen district of Dassel, Germany. Founded in 1584 it is a significant producer of coated paper for inkjet printing, artist's paper for traditional painting and printing techniques, and filter paper for industry and research. It is a highly regarded fine art paper used by many professional artists for its quality. Read more about this

What if I am unhappy with my print?

If for any reason you are not happy with the print, you can ship it back to me and I will refund your payment minus shipping charges.
