New work

This is a small Ampersand Clayboard I am working on.  I am etching into it (for now at least)  It is called "Bound White House" and is 4 x 6 inches.  I am combining my on-going obsession with both my inner and the outer worlds and the icon of 'hone'  in this piece.

En Pleine Air Paintings in Maine Triada Samaras

I have never tried En Pleine Air Paintings before.  This week all that changed.  I took my art materials outdoors and tried it in two locations:  Portland Headlight and Eastern Promenade.  It was actually sheer bliss to go outdoors with my art materials. I will be doing more of this in the very near future!

En plein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ]French for outdoors, or plein air painting) is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look.

In contrast the painting below of my son Leo walking in the Maine woods was done in my studio from a photo.  The difference is the amount of imagination I allow myself  with the light and colors in the studio.  In en pleine air painting I follow what I see outdoors with my naked eyes.  In the studio I let my imagination take over sometimes completely sometimes.  In fact, many times!

Art Work by Triada Samaras

Paterson, NJ, June 7, 2019The Paterson Museum is proud to present an exhibition titled, Unbound: Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures by Triada Samaras.  The exhibition will be on display from Sunday, June 23, through Sunday, August 11.  There will be an artist reception held on Sunday, June 30, from 1-4pm.  On Sunday, August 11 there will be a closing reception from 1-4 PM and a poetry reading at 2 PM.

The exhibition “Unbound”features recent works by Triada Samaras who is a Paterson Public Schools Art Professor in Residence for William Paterson University/WP.  Ms. Samaras is also Adjunct Professor of Art Education at WP and Adjunct Professor of Art at Kean University.

Triada Samaras is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions and venues. Samaras is a New England born, Greek-American who has family members living on both sides of the Atlantic.  She has lived and worked in Brooklyn, New York for many years.  For over 15 years, Samaras has been exploring the themes of identity, body, house/home, voice, and geography in her work, often in art activist contexts.  The exhibition “Unbound”features similar themes as well.  However, in this body of art work,  Samaras creates from a far more personal vantage point, finding additional inspiration in her poetry.

Ms. Samaras stated in a recent interview “My artwork is often autobiographical.  Through familiar representations such as house, home, and the body I explore my human feelings, thoughts, memories, perceptions, and experiences.  I also utilize words to infuse these icons with added meaning. But the icons and the words are almost always metaphors.  “Unbound” refers to the liberation I experience in the creative process, as well as to the names of specific artworks in this show. To me the word, “Unbound” conjures up powerful images including: Abolition, deliverance, democracy, emancipation, salvation, freeing, liberty, release, setting free, unchaining and unshackling. I have learned over time to release these emotional forces as an artist to a greater realm, one that is imaginary and mysterious and even more powerful.  Using artmaking I enjoy being catapulted beyond what I know and transformed.  Art can set me free.”

The Paterson Museum is located on the corners of Market and Spruce Streets in the heart of the Great Falls/S.U.M Historic District.  Visiting hours are Monday-Friday 10:00 to 4:00 and Saturday and Sunday 12:30 to 4:30. A two-dollar donation for adults is appreciated.  For information and directions call the Museum at 973-321-1260.

My Latest Painting

I have finally completed my latest large scale painting.
This makes me very happy.
It slowly percolated for over a year.
Now I must find it a name.
Below are cell phone images.
I will make some better photographs of it soon.

My Great Greek Aunt in Athens lives on.....

Recently I was selected for an art project that will include this photograph I took a few years ago of my Beloved Great Aunt Sofia Zaglaris with her son, Ioannis Zaglaris in their home in Athens.

Above:  Triada Samaras Digital Photo- Greece 2012- Enoikiazetai  Poleitai For Rent For Sale

This photograph will be included in the winter art publication and online exhibition, GENESIS. The online exhibit will take place between JAN 1 – MAR, 2019 and can be viewed at www.dabart.me and www.artsy.net

I am so happy to say that while she is not longer with us on the planet, Madame Sofia Zaglaris does live on!

A Collaboration to Re-Imagine an Infamous Book of 'Art History'

The above two pages will be included in a collaborative book project by Sue J. Norton Poplin.  Her call for art to 'women only' included this intriguing description:  "I will be
altering an H.W. Janson's History of Art Book by covering as many pages possible of the book with original art made by women." (SJNP)

Of course I could not resist.  The Janson's History of Art Book that I studied repeatedly while an undergraduate at Smith College was practically devoid of women's art.  Sigh.
But now that can change!  Stay tuned for more on this project....

about
THE EXHIBIT: The FL3TCH3R Exhibt
SOCIAL & POLITICALLY ENGAGED ART
The Annual FL3TCH3R EXHIBIT is an international juried exhibit focused on socially and politically engaged art. Socially and politically engaged art has been integral in creative expression since the beginning of visual arts. This exhibition explores the current trends and trajectory in this field and these collective creative works hopefully serve as an avenue or agent for societal transformation and exposure of social and political points of view. The goal is to recognize and advance this endeavor by providing a venue for the exhibition of socially and politically engaged art. Furthermore, the exhibit's proceeds after expenses will fund the Fletcher H. Dyer Memorial Scholarship for an art and design student.
